August 19: CSSVista - a sneak preview
I've been working on CSSVista for a while now and it's nearly ready for beta testing over at SiteVista.
CSSVista is a standalone Windows application for web developers. Inspired by Chris Pederick's work with the Firefox Web Developer Extension, CSSVista takes his indispensable CSS editing feature a step further. With CSSVista you'll be able to edit your style sheet and it see it update in both Internet Explorer and Firefox at the same time, as you type.
I know from my own experiences and from Paul's feedback so far that this is going to be a big help and I hope that other web developers will think so too.

Oh, and we plan to make it free.

CSS Vista sounds like a great little product. Can't wait to have a gander. :)

Wow. I'm really pleased it's being so well received! As far as I know, Matt's got the live CSS editing working perfectly with both Firefox and IE, and all that's left to do are a few small bits and pieces.
Hopefully we'll see it ready in the next week or two.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone!
Paul - Yes, that's right, I've got the css editor working with both IE and FF, just got to finish the browser nav stuff (keeping IE and FF on the same page - form posts are proving tricky), the SiteVista integration (so you can test other browsers) and tidy it all up a bit.
It goes without saying that I'll keep this blog updated with CSSVista's progress.

I find Chris Pederick's Firefox extension invaluable. Great idea adding IE into the mix, I won't be able to use it though, 'cause I'm on a Mac :-(

Poncho: Yes, we can't get around that I'm afraid. Obviously this application will always be Windows-only. If you need to test on PC browsers from your Mac, why not try SiteVista? ;-)

Hi John,
Very nearly! I'm hoping to have 0.1 out by the end of next week.
Thanks for your interest :-)

Awesome, I have been looking for something like this; it will save everyone a lot of time. And I can't believe you are going to make it available for free. This can't get any better. BTW live preview of comments is really cool.

I just saw this blogposting (and don't know how I got here), but I am wondering when you will release a beta version of the CSSVista as the tool looks very nice if I may say so myself.
Currently I am using Topstyle in order to create my stylesheets, but this is not supporting multibrowser previewing of the stylesheets on different tabs and this is something I like very much.
In you reaction of August 29th you mention that you will have it ready by the end of this week. Could you tell us (or write a new blogpost about this) if you will have a preview available.

Woudloper - I'm really pleased you're looking forward to it. Although it's taking a little longer than we'd hoped to get it launched, Matt is still actively working on it and, fingers crossed, we'll get a beta version out shortly.

I was using the Firefox web developer CSS editor to get everything looking just right. I popped over to IE and... yuck! And idle thought struck me: wouldn't it be nice if someone built a multibrowser css editor? A Google search on that term brought me here.
I can't wait!

Don't hold me to this, but there's a chance we'll be launching it tonight (26 October).

Hmm, yes. Sorry John, and everyone else, it obviously didn't launch on the 26th. Turns out we need to wait until the full release of Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 until we can do our final build, so Matt has told me.
That means it's another few weeks to wait guys - sorry!
I've posted an update over on the SiteVista blog about our progress, but feel free to keep prodding us on this thread until we do actually launch!
