September 30: Digital River don't keep backups
Back in 1997 I wrote a program called Instant Theme Creator, which let you put together Windows desktop themes. I started selling it online and it did pretty well. In fact, I still get get a little income from it (and it's slightly newer cousin Theme Creator Gold) to this day.
I sell it online through RegNow (now owned by Digital River), who have been pretty good over the years... until a week ago.
They have lost their copy of the software. The file that they provide to my customers once they've paid has been lost. I asked if they could replace it from one of their backups, only to be told:
I spoke to a developer and he does not believe there is any way that the file can be recovered. The file has seemed [sic] to have been lost.
(Emphasis mine.) It seems to me that although they've been entrusted by thousands of developers to deliver software to their customers, they don't think to keep the files backed up. In an organisation made up of over 800 employees, has it crossed no-one's mind that this might be something worth considering?
