August 18: Further ideas for RSS
I feel that at present RSS isn't being used to its full potential. I'm not suggesting extending it or anything tricky like that, I just mean being more inventive with the content you syndicate with it.
For example, what about setting you feed up such that the first time a person grabs it, they get a "thanks for subscribing"-type post appear in it. Then the next time they refresh it, it goes back to their regular blog content.
Another idea I heard kicked around by someone a while back was having a blog that only consisted of a feed. As far as I know, no-one's done that yet. Upon further contemplation however, there are some critical flaws to that - no-one can link to your posts, no-one can send trackbacks, and no-one can comment. Kind of destroys the whole basis of blogging really. Still, an interesting idea none the less.
A final, more simple, idea is just to add slightly more information to your feeds. For example, on 37signals' blog a number of authors contribute, and I actually care who wrote what. However, you can't get the authors's name without clicking through to the post on their web site. It would be easy to add that information at the bottom of each post in the feed. I've just done it with this blog, in fact.
