Macromedia event summary

Yesterday I attended a free Macromedia seminar on their new product suite, Studio 8. I thought I'd do a quick roundup of some things I thought were interesting...

  • They're giving up on Fireworks, it seems - the guy was pretty negative about it today.
  • They're going to be running Flash Lite on most new mobile phones in the next couple of years. They have deals with Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola etc.
  • They're beefed up the CSS features in Dreamweaver in version 8. Still not that great though, I thought. But you can now use guides in design view (cool), and zoom in on the page (a proper zoom, so pixels look big, al la Opera - very cool)
  • A guy asked about whether Flash would do proper 3D, what with all the Vista stuff coming up and 3D interfaces looking to become popular. The Macromedia guy said "no", and that there wasn't a market for that. I think they'll change their tune once Vista is released with all the XAML stuff, personally.
  • Oh, and FTP transfers now take place in the background in Dreamweaver.

All that said though, I'm switching from Dreamweaver to skEdit myself, and no longer use Flash, so their selling process didn't really work on me :-)
