October 03: The rise of illustration
Recently it seems more and more sites are adding illustration to their designs. As has been said before, the rise of CSS in the past couple of years has brought a renaissance of "boxy" designs. I've fallen foul of this myself.
I can't draw to save my life, so I try and use photography to liven up otherwise dreary designs (like the big chip on a fork here on Salted), but the recent A List Apart redesign uses illustration, as does the ever-popular Joshuaink.
I predict that illustration will continue to increase in popularity over the next couple of years, and I'll be keeping an eye on talented folk like Holly Lloyd and Kevin Cornell, as I think their work (and others' like it) will start cropping up more often.
